Jakarta,-Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (BRIN) menyatakan sedang meneliti berbagai potensi obat anti malaria. Ini bersumber dari beragam biodiversitas yang dimiliki oleh Indonesia.
Periset Biologi Molekuler Eijkman BRIN Josephine Siregar mengatakan kemunculan parasit malaria yang kebal obat membuat para ilmuwan harus menemukan obat-obatan baru. Guna mengatasi masalah tersebut.
“Indonesia sangat kaya sumber biodiversitas. Untuk itulah kita bisa bersama-sama membuat penelitian dan penemuan obat baru,” kata Josephine, Rabu (18/10/2023).
Josephine menuturkan BRIN kini memiliki koleksi parasit plasmodium atovaquone dan plasmodium pyrimethamine. Beberapa penelitian parasit malaria yang resisten terhadap sulfadoxine, artemisinin, piperaquine, dan obat-obat malaria lainnya juga dilakukan oleh lembaga riset pelat merah tersebut.
“Kita bisa bekerja bersama-sama. Saya mengundang peneliti-peneliti dari universitas ataupun institusi lainnya untuk melakukan screening Indonesian biodiversity for antimalaria candidate,” ujarnya.
Lebih lanjut dia menyampaikan bahwa riset obat yang bersumber dari biodiversitas itu kelak bisa menargetkan semua siklus parasit malaria. Kompleksitas siklus hidup parasit malaria membuat Indonesia membutuhkan beberapa obat yang bisa mengobati pasien, seperti vivax dan ovale yang dormant malaria.
BRIN masih tetap mencoba untuk menggali penemuan obat untuk mengobati penyakit malaria. Meski mereka juga memiliki obat-obatan khusus berupa vivax dan ovale tersebut.
“Kami butuh model untuk menelusuri seluruh siklus hidup parasit malaria. Kalau pakai parasit yang ada pada manusia harus butuh relawan manusia untuk kami gigitan ke nyamuk dan sebagainya, itu juga tidak mudah,” ucapnya.
“Pengembangan model menggunakan mencit itu sangat baik sekali untuk pengembangan obat malaria baru. Semoga ke depan kita bisa mendapatkan suatu kandidat khususnya dari Indonesia,” katanya.
